Parabureau project 70 Years of Zagreb Film

In 2023, the Zagreb Film Institution marked the 70th anniversary of its founding. In 1953, the Association of Film Workers of Croatia established a film production company named Zagreb Film. Over the course of 70 years, Zagreb Film has won more than 400 awards at festivals worldwide. Among the most significant is the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, presented in 1961 for Ersatz, directed by Dušan Vukotić.

One of Zagreb Film’s most recognizable trademarks, used from 1969 to the present day, is the stylized figure of a horse. The logo was created by the renowned animator, illustrator, and caricaturist Borivoj Dovniković Bordo.

This very horse serves as the central protagonist of Zagreb Film’s 70th anniversary visual identity. Proudly standing on the pedestal of the stylized number 70, it stands out as the only black element on the surface, thereby gaining additional visual prominence. The typography has been refreshed through the use of a contemporary typeface that combines geometric, Swiss, and modern technological aesthetics, suggesting that despite its long tradition, Zagreb Film remains fully aligned with contemporary technologies. The colors are derived from the Institution’s new website, while the contrast between vivid hues and the monochromatic combination of the background and core elements further communicates the passage of time in the world of film — from black-and-white cinema to the modern era.
